HARVARD (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Harvard City Council has approved backyard chicken coops.

It’s a two-year pilot program that passed on a vote of six to one. There’s a $300 permit fee and a $25 annual inspection fee.

There’s also a limit on the number of chickens, based on acreage. Those with less than two acres can have four birds. Eight are for two to three acres and 12 can be had on larger properties.

They have to be kept in coops or runs. Free-range chickens aren’t allowed.

The Northwest Herald reported other McHenry County communities, including Cary, Crystal Lake and Fox River Grove, have denied similar requests in recent years.
