CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The head of the Chicago Commission on Human Relations told the City Council that hate crimes in Chicago are up over last year.

According to Nancy Andrade, chair of the Commission on Human Relations, hate crimes are up 71 percent over this time last year. Through Tuesday, there were 77 hate crimes reported to the commission.

Police Department numbers are even higher. That compares to 45 complaints to the commission during the same time frame last year.

"During the pandemic, Asian-Americans faced increased incidents of biased-related attacks. Thus far in 2022, reported hate crimes are on the rise particularly those based on race and religion with Blacks at 50% and Jews 75%," she said.

Andrade said that when hate incidents happen, the commission works with those communities trying to convince people how wrong the action was and sometimes people actually pay attention.
