CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Cook County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy Thursday on the body of a 30-year-old man, who was found dead in a Streeterville apartment that had reportedly had two pipe bombs inside.

Chicago police were called to the apartment in the 200 block of East Illinois Street around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night to conduct a well-being.

According to CWB Chicago, the 30-year-old man's father reportedly went to his son’s apartment Tuesday night, because he had not heard from him and was concerned about his well-being. But the father, who had a key to the unit, was unable to open the door, because it seemed to be blocked from the inside. That is when he called police.

Upon arrival, police found 30-year-old Theodore Hilk dead in his bedroom. They also found hazardous materials, including chemicals and laboratory equipment.

Fire department personnel responded and cleared the scene by 2 a.m.

On Wednesday afternoon, officers conducting a follow-up investigation on the man’s death found found explosive materials — including two pipe bombs in the refrigerator, prompting a “hazmat situation” and a large response by police, fire, and FBI personnel, CWB Chicago reported.

Two floors in the building were evacuated, and the FBI was called to the scene alongside officers from the Chicago Police SWAT team and bomb unit, police said.

Chicago police spokesman Tom Ahern would not elaborate on the nature of the materials found, but said specialty units “contained the items found in the apartment” and were going to “take them and render them safe.”

Police said the scene was cleared by 11 p.m. and the materials were “disposed of” less than an hour later.

Further information was not immediately available.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
