(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A 44-year-old Chicago woman who had a heart transplant 10 years ago celebrated her milestone at Advocate Christ Medical Center.

“I’m grateful and I’m happy to be here,” said Nikki Brown, who shared the hospital auditorium stage with 20 members of her care team, including the transplant surgeons. “They literally saved a dying woman.”

She said her journey has had ups and downs, but always Brown said she tries to honor the gift she was given a decade ago.

Brown said she she’s travelled and even went skydiving – of the indoor variety, that is.

“I’m crazy, but I’m not that crazy,” she said.

She also said she is constantly thinking about the donor whose gift she received. A necklace she wears includes her donor’s thumbprint.

“I tell her every day, ‘We’re stuck like this forever.’”

February is American Heart Month.
