CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Voodoo Doughnut, the Portland, Ore., doughnut maker known for its extravagant, gourmet creations will officially open its first Chicago store on Dec. 16, the company announced Monday.

The Fulton Market location, which will take the place of Umami Burger near West Randolph and North Morgan Streets, will open at 8 a.m. after a ribbon cutting celebration.

In a press release, company officials said the first 50 people in line would be “treated to a delightful surprise.”

Voodoo Doughnut’s Chicago location will be the company’s 22nd store — and its first in Illinois.

“We are thrilled to open our first store in Chicago just in time for all to enjoy some of that Voodoo magic during the holiday season,” said Voodoo Doughnuts CEO Christ Schultz.

The very first Voodoo Doughnut location opened in 2003 in Portland, where it earned a reputation for original takes on doughnuts, perhaps most notably for its bacon maple bar.

Illinois will be the ninth state in the U.S. to have a Voodoo Doughnut location. The company has other locations in Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Arizona, Texas, California, Tennessee and Florida.

Company officials said they would contribute a portion of the grand opening day’s sales to Make-A-Wish Illinois.
