(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Highland Park teen made his first court appearance Tuesday after being charged in the fatal shooting of a boy his same age on Sunday.
Estiven Sarminento, 16, is facing two felony counts of first-degree murder for the death of 16-year-old Omar Diaz.
Diaz was walking on a sidewalk along Green Bay Road when Highland Park police said Sarminento approached him. The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force said the two had an ongoing dispute.
The teens spoke briefly before Sarminento allegedly pulled out a gun.
Prosecutors said Diaz was on a Snapchat video call at the time, and a friend who witnessed the shooting was able to identify Sarminento as the shooter.
The 16-year-old is being tried as an adult. His bond was set at $5 million.
