Deerfield and Highland Park community to host car rally for in-person learning

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- While coronavirus cases continue to climb throughout Illinois, Deerfield and Highland Park parents are hosting a caravan car rally Saturday to support in-person learning.

The parents said they’re fed up with the lack of progress in getting students back to in-person learning.

“Remote learning, especially for the younger grades, is just failing miserably,” said James D’Angelo, a parent of two children in District 109.

Township High School District 113, North Shore School District 112, and Deerfield Public School District 109 currently have students learning remote following a surge in coronavirus cases. They said they would return to a hybrid learning model once community metrics improve.

But D’Angelo told WBBM Newsradio they should still find a way to reopen.

“Now is not the time to sit back and watch, now is the time to plan,” added D’Angelo.

D’Angelo founded the group, Deerfield for In-Person Schooling (DIPS), which is organizing a caravan car rally on Saturday, Nov. 14 to get students back in school.

“I’m hopeful that when we get together and they see how important this is for our community, that they change their mind and start putting in the time and effort to make better plans that get more of our students in school quicker," he said.

Parents said they want elementary and middle school students back in-person immediately and for Deerfield and Highland Park high schools to reopen by January 2021.

The caravan rally will meet at Highland Park High School on Saturday at 10 a.m.
