(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A group of residents in south suburban Homewood is fighting a plan to build a warehouse distribution center on the site of the former Calumet Country Club.
Liz Varmecky belongs to the group "South Suburbs for Greenspace over Concrete," which was formed to oppose the project.
She said the project would put a major industrial development right across the street from homes and increase air pollution for Homewood and surrounding suburbs.
"Air doesn't just stop at village boundaries," she said Thursday.
There could be an increased risk of flooding, too, she added.
A court settlement between the developer and the village means the project is likely to get approval. But Varmecky said her group is talking with Cook County commissioners about stepping in to help block the development.
She also said the Illinois Environmental Protect Agency could intervene because it raised concerns about past proposals to develop the property.
