CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The extreme winter weather can put dogs and cats at risk, but a veterinarian says there are several ways to help keep them safe.
Dr. Tony Kremer of the Old Town Animal Care Center worries some dogs and cats will spend too much time out in the cold. He says dogs should only be let out when necessary. As for walks, he suggests doing them more frequently with much shorter durations.
He suggests protecting paws from ice and salt by covering them with some petroleum jelly or "paw boots."
“When (you) are going to try little boots or shoes on their dogs, some dogs will tolerate them very well, they can be a great protector. But, when you buy them, make sure you buy two packages of them because inevitably they’ll be running around out in snow and lose one of them, and, let me tell you, you might find that boot til spring,” Kremer laughs.
As for indoor cats, Kremer says they should not be let outside when it's this cold, because it can be difficult sometimes to get them to come back in.
For cats that usually spend time outside, he recommends providing them with some type of shelter from the cold and making sure they have access to food and water that isn't frozen.
