Staking tall plants is crucial for their health and productivity. On this week's episode of the Gardening Tips podcast, the Chicago Botanic Garden's Jacob Burns talks about how you should stake your tall plants for a healthier and more productive garden.

Tall plants, like tomatoes, delphiniums and sunflowers, can become top heavy and risk falling over, especially in windy conditions. Staking will provide the support needed to keep your plants upright. It will lift heavy fruits and flowers off ground, providing airflow and preventing rot and pest attacks.

Sturdy materials like bamboo, wooden stakes and metal rods are popular choices. Take rebar, for instance. It's a durable option; plus it adds an industrial chic touch to your garden. Avoid injuries by placing safety caps on the top of each rod, drive the rebar into the crown next to the plant, ensuring it is deep enough for stability. Secure stems to the rebar with soft ties regularly adjusting them as plants grow.

Enjoy a more productive and visually appealing garden with this simple technique.
