CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A new mural is going up this week on the outside of the Steppenwolf Theatre’s new building in Lincoln Park.
It’s a first for artist and actor Tony Fitzpatrick. The outdoor mural, which is 12 feet high and 76 feet long, is called "Night and Day in the Garden of All Other Ecstasies" and was digitally printed onto 57 ceramic porcelain tiles in Bologna, Italy.
According to the Sun-Times, the floral mural is based off conversations Fitzpatrick had with his mentor, Martha Lavey, the theatre’s former artistic director who died in 2017.
The Fitzpatrick, 62, worked with fellow artist Danny Torres to bring it to life. And while this is Fitzpatrick’s largest work to date and his first outdoor mural, he said it will be his last public art for the City of Chicago.
“I think it’s time for guys who look like me to get out of the way. My show coming up in October at the [College of DuPage] will be my last museum show. This will be my final public artwork for the city of Chicago. I’m still going to do gallery shows all over the world, I just feel like,... when you get to the top of the hill, you pull the next person up. I think there needs to be more room for artists of color, for LGBTQ artists and for female artists," he told the Sun-Times.
