CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement reportedly took a father into custody Wednesday outside an Acero Charter School in the Gage Park neighborhood.
It happened outside an Acero elementary school at 5050 South Homan Avenue, according to members of the Chicago Teachers Union.
“A father was trying to drop off his two babies. This president is trying to attack this community,” a CTU member said at an evening press conference.
This came to light as members of the Acero school community rallied to save three Acero schools that could be closed.
“Now, CPS [Chicago Public Schools] is saying that they are going to guarantee no schools will be open after next year,” teacher Ethan Bula said.
The School Board is taking up the Acero closures.
“CPS would not legally be able to fund Acero at the level needed to maintain all campuses, considering enrollment loss and the significant need for facility investments,” said the district in a statement.
