CHICAGO'S NORTH SIDE (WBBM Newsradio) - Federal authorities are sharing new information about the decision by ICE agents to take a teacher into custody inside a North side daycare center as caregivers, parents and students watched.
But local elected leaders say that they don't believe it, and that no one else should either.
Dozens of parents and religious and community leaders joined Chicago Democratic Reps. Mike Quigley and Delia Ramirez to condemn Wednesday morning's action at the Rayita de Sol center at Addison and Rockwell.
Maria Guzman is a member of the parents group, who told reporters at Quigley's office during an appearance Wednesday afternoon that the teacher taken into custody is a trusted member of the staff and has legal authorization to work in the U.S.
"There were children in the building. There were babies in the building," Guzman said. "They came into the building understanding it was a daycare."
A statement from a DHS spokesperson says in part that agents were trying to make a targeted traffic stop of a car registered to someone they describe as illegal ... and that the person barricaded herself inside the daycare.
Rep. Ramirez said she doesn't buy it.
"They lie," said Rep. Ramirez (D-3rd District). "They lie over and over and over, the same way they lied about Silverio Villegas Gonzales when they killed him, they're lying here."
Rep. Quigley (D-5th District) echoed that sentiment, saying he doesn't believe anything that comes out of the Trump Administration: "This is a president who every time he gets in a room with the truth, a fight breaks out."
The woman taken into custody was reportedly taken to the ICE facility in Broadview.
