CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - It's Casimir Pulaski Day in Illinois, and leaders, residents, and community from across the state gathered at the Polish Museum of America to celebrate.

Polish dance and song rang throughout the Polish Museum of America, located in Chicago's Noble Square.

It's an area Mayor Brandon Johnson said is defined by Polish pride and tradition.

"This is where folks came together to fight for Poland's freedom during its many fights for independence…These are the traits which I have come to know that are so strong in the spirit of my Polish brothers and sisters,” Johnson said.

Pulaski Day celebrates the Polish war hero Casimir Pulaski, who died while fighting for America's freedom in Revolutionary War.

Polish immigrant Anna Sokolowski said the day also honors the contributions of all immigrants.

"This man, really, he died for this country, so we should appreciate not only him but all the other immigrants who came and fought for this country and made it what it is today,” Sokolowski said.
