A downstate congressman who had the coronavirus in August is talking about the message it sends to Americans now that President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have it.

Congressman Rodney Davis, a Republican from central Illinois, had a mild case of COVID-19 and was glad his wife and his staffers did not contract it it from him.

"Five days after initial diagnosis, I had the highest temperature and I began to lose a little of my taste and smell. I didn’t completely lose it,” he tells WBBM Newsradio’s Bernie Tafoya.

Davis said Friday the worst part of having COVID anticipating possibly getting worse symptoms, which did not happen to him.

“I think it’s going to send a major message to this country that this disease is still out there. This disease is still going to impact what we do,” he says of the president’s diagnosis.

To those who are pushing the idea on social media that President Trump may be faking a COVID-19 diagnosis, for some reason, Davis says that doesn’t make sense.

"You’re not going to fake a diagnosis of COVID when you’re an elected official, I can tell you that,” he said.

If the president’s symptoms worsen, the congressman believes the White House will be transparent, especially since it's so difficult to keep a secret in Washington.
