CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Starting next month, some employers in Illinois will be required to share payroll information with the state to ensure those businesses are paying their employees fairly.
Jason Keller of the Illinois Department of Labor said businesses with at least 100 employees will be required to prove that they do not discriminate based on race, ethnicity or gender when it comes to what they pay workers.
Keller said employers will be notified by email when it's time for them to provide the necessary information.
"Once they are in compliance with the equal pay law that we have on the books, we will issue them an equal pay registration certificate," said Keller.
Employers will have a minimum of four months to submit the required payroll information, once the state has notified them.
Because the rules apply to thousands of businesses in Illinois, Keller said it could take more than a year for the state to send notifications to all of those employers.
