(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - If you’re planning to drive to see family and friends for Christmas, you may find gasoline prices more to your liking.

“Prices (are) now down 80-cents in the last 30 days, a pretty hefty decline,” said GasBuddy analyst Patrick DeHaan.

DeHaan said the Chicago Metro average for gas prices is now $3.41 a gallon.

“Over 15 stations have fallen under three dollars a gallon, of course a lot of those being wholesale clubs. (There’s) even a station at $2.75 a gallon in Romeoville.”

DeHaan said half of the country’s 50 states are averaging under $3.00/gallon.

At the start of the new year, the Illinois gas tax increase that was put on hold in July will go into effect. It’ll be a couple of cents a gallon extra, however, DeHaan said gas stations may just slow the rate that they’re lowering gas prices.

“Motorists aren’t likely to notice the potential increase as it could be absorbed by the fact that stations are having better margins than they normally do,” DeHaan said.

The Illinois gasoline tax was supposed to go up in July but state officials postponed the increase for six months. That’s January 1.

The tax is scheduled to go up every July from now at the rate of inflation, so there’ll be two gasoline tax increases in 2023.
