(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Are you really who you think you are?

Illinois may get its own law addressing “fertility fraud” — when, for example, a doctor inseminates a patient with his own sperm.

Bloomington’s Curt Richardson found out the same day as his parents that he is a victim. He went to State Sen. Dave Koehler, D-Peoria.

“What Curt found out, since then,” said Koehler, “is that he has 85 half-siblings. Pretty hard to get your arms around that.”

The Indiana fertility doctor who is his father lost his license and received a $500 fine, Koehler said, effectively “a slap on the wrist.”

His measure would make fertility fraud a Class I felony.

Why would a doctor use his own sperm? Koehler says maybe it’s a God complex.
