(WBBM NEWSRADIO) --  Local government and health officials say there is a maternal crisis in Illinois. Too many women of color are dying during pregnancy and around childbirth.

Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller chaired a County Board hearing this week showing the maternal mortality rate here is higher than in some other developed nations.

Dr. Gwendolyn Oglesby-Odom, a vice President with Advocate Trinity Hospital said Americans should be embarrassed by the numbers.

"If we're going to address health equity, we have to start with maternal health-with black maternal health specifically. We have to sound the alarm."

She also said health officials must provide better patient education and services for pregnant women. She's also calling for more culturally sensitive healthcare treatments.

Congresswoman Robin Kelly has sponsored legislation to focus more resources on Black women's health.
