(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Illinois Secretary of State’s office says it is streamlining the driver’s license renewal process in hopes of avoiding the long lines that have formed outside facilities over the past several months.
The Secretary of State’s office will be letting more people make appointments at more drivers services facilities. Also, more people will be allowed to renew their driver’s licenses on-line.
For instance, beginning September, drivers with one minor infraction who have had to come in to a Secretary of State’s Office facility will now be able to renew online.
So-called “safe drivers” will be able to renew online two times consecutively.
The Secretary of State’s office said this new system is expected to take 1 million people out of the lines at facilities.
The ones who still have to show up? They’re encouraged to make appointments.
Also, anyone coming to a Secretary of State’s location will be required to wear a mask indoors as of Monday Aug. 2.
