(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office issued a warning about new tactics scammers are using to try and get personal information.

Officials said scammers are sending out fake emails and texts that appear to be from the Secretary of State's Office, including some offering $1,500 payments to help residents deal with high fuel prices.

Other such messages claimed to be from the Illinois DMV.

The state urged people to never open the emails or texts, and delete them immediately.

A spokesman for the Illinois Secretary of State's Office says that office never uses emails, texts or phone calls to ask people for personal information.

The Secretary of State’s Office has historically reminded Illinoisans to double-check whether they are on the office’s official government website: www.cyberdriveillinois.com.
