(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Illinois Secretary of State is applauding the Illinois house for passing legislation that would deny state grants to libraries that go along with book bans.

Alexi Giannoulias said he's "super excited" that the house approved the bill that hopes to discourage the removal of books from libraries because of the objections of some to their subject matter. Of course, he would support that legislation since he proposed it.

"We have to protect our libraries, our librarians- as the state librarian, we want to protect free speech. I think the book banning that's going on across the country is dangerous to our democracy," he said.

"It's dangerous to our children and it flies in the face of what education has always been about."

Giannoulias said he's hoping for a quick Senate passage, so that it can go into effect in Illinois and be enforced. There have been moves in Illinois and other states like Florida to ban some books that deal with issues like race or sexual orientation.
