Illinois State Trooper died following crash in Champaign County

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An Illinois state trooper died Friday following a crash in Champaign County.

State Police say Corey Thompsen, 28, was involved in a two-vehicle collision at about 3:30 pm. He was on-duty at the time.

Police say he died of his injuries about an hour later.

State Police Director Brendan Kelly wrote on social media, “It is with a heavy heart and immeasurable sadness that I inform you of the death of Trooper Corey S. Thompsen.

“We ask the public to give Trooper Thompsen’s family, and his ISP family, time while we grieve and work through this tragedy.”

Thompsen had been on the job for about five years.

Police have not provided details of the crash.

More than 100 police vehicles were part of a procession as the trooper’s body was taken to the morgue.
