(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Brandon Johnson's controversial Real Estate Transfer Tax proposal appears to have cleared its last legal hurdle before Tuesday's primary election.

The Illinois Supreme Court on Wednesday afternoon denied a request by opponents of the so-called “Bring Chicago Home” referendum to appeal a lower-court ruling that the measure is legal.

Voters have been asked whether to raise the tax on sales of real estate valued at more than $1 million while lowering the transfer tax for properties valued at less than $1 million.

Supporters have said it would generate as much as $100 million for programs to benefit unhoused Chicagoans.

Those in opposition have described the proposal as “misleading and manipulative” and questioned whether the city has an actual plan to use the money for its stated goals of addressing the root causes of homelessness.

Early voting for the 2024 Illinois primary election is already underway, and election day is March 19.
