CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Illinois Secretary of State's Office is closing driver services facilities for three weeks and is extending the expirations of driver's licenses and ID cards until next June, all because of complications caused by COVID-19.

The bureaus, sometimes referred to as DMVs by the general public, will close Nov. 17 and reopen Dec. 7. Secretary of State Jesse White notes that drivers have renewal options available online.

Commercial driver licensing facilities will remain open for truck drivers.

Expiration dates for non-CDL driver's licenses and ID cards will be extended until June 1, 2021. That includes drivers who have February, March, April and May 2021 expiration dates.

"The health and safety of employees and the public remains paramount and face-to-face transactions potentially increase the further spread of the virus," White said Friday in explaining the moves.
