(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois is a step closer to trying so-called ranked choice voting in its elections, but it's a long way off from becoming a reality here.
Patrick Hanley of FairVote Illinois says elections legislation Gov. JB Pritzker signed this week sets up a task force to evaluate ranked choice.
Under this method, voters may select up to three candidates for office, in order of preference. Ballots are tabulated in rounds, if necessary, and candidates with the fewest votes are eliminated.
State Rep. Kam Buckner, a proponent of the measure, says that system can eliminate costly runoff elections and encourage canidates to run on the issues.
Hanley says Maine and Alaska and some 60 counties and cities nationwide have ranked choice voting.
The Illinois task force would report on the possibility of using ranked voting in some elections, as soon as 2028.
