(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois Tollway officials are trying to clear up some confusion regarding I-PASS transponders and their expiration dates.

It turns out that more than 3 million Illinois drivers have I-PASS transponders with incorrect expiration dates falling between 2020 and 2026.

“All customers with expiration dates on their transponders between 2020 and 2026 have two more years before they’ll be prompted to exchange their transponders by the tollway,” explains agency spokeswoman Joelle McGinnis.

She said the problem stems from a transition between transponders with eight-year life spans to ones with 10-year spans.

“If for some reason customers have any questions about their transponders or they see some unusual activity on their account that doesn’t make sense to them, they can always call or stop by one of our customer service centers,” McGinnis said. “We’d be happy to help them out.”

McGinnis added that customers will also receive a letter from the tollway when it’s time to replace a transponder. A swap can be done at any Jewel-Osco store, she said.
