CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Doctors from Chicago and the suburbs spoke Monday in support of the Protect Illinois Communities Act, a bill which would ban some firearms and high-capacity magazines.

The trauma surgeons spoke about the wounds caused by weapons like AK47s and the ability of mass shooters to target many more victims with high-capacity magazines. The physicians noted their displeasure to the amendment added to the bill by the Illinois Senate.

“What many of you don’t see, in the general public, are the faces of those parents, when we tell them on the worst night of their lives that we could do nothing to save their child or their loved one,” said Dr. Halleh Akbarnia, an emergency room physician at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. “We hear the most heart-wrenching screams that echo in the ER and resonate with us forever.”

The organization, Federal Firearms Licensees of Illinois, said the general assembly needs to quit blaming gun owners and a heavily regulated industry for the acts of criminals and psychopaths. A legal challenge is being prepared.
