Impairment suspected in wrong-way crash, police say

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A wrong-way head-on crash over the weekend has left three motorists with serious injuries, and authorities suspect alcohol played a role.

Lake County police responded around 8:15 p.m. Sunday to reports of a collision at Route 12 and Russell Avenue in Volo. There, they found two vehicles with significant damage, officials said in a news release issued Monday.

Investigators think the crash occurred this way: The 24-year-old driver of a Ford Mustang was driving the wrong way on Route 12 and struck a Mitsubishi Outlander driven by a 36-year-old woman from Deerfield.

The driver of the Mitsubishi sustained a fractured spine and brain bleeding. The driver of the Mustang, who is from Fox Lake, also sustained serious injuries, as did his 23-year-old passenger, who was not wearing a seat belt and was unable to feel his legs, police said.

“Sheriff's deputies and crash investigators located some open containers of alcohol inside of the Ford," Lake County Deputy Chief Chris Covelli tells WBBM Newsradio. "And based on their preliminary investigation, it does appear that alcohol and possibly drugs, was a factor in this crash."

Charges are pending based on the results of blood analysis, he said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team continues to investigate.
