In-person music lessons return; Students rock on

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Like many businesses, Hix Bros Music was forced to adapt to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Aurora and Batavia locations shifted from in-person to virtual music lessons.

“We never did it before, and in some ways it was kind of good, because if a person can’t leave their house for whatever reason, they can do a lesson online,” said owner Carl Hix. “In fact, I have a student now that had to move to Ohio and she does her lessons online.”

Hix admits virtual lessons are far from ideal, telling WBBM Newsradio platforms like Zoom make it very difficult for students and teachers to play along together.

That’s why it was a huge relief when the music store slowly started bringing back in-person lessons in March.

“We used the big teaching rooms that normally use bands and we made sure everybody had masks and it seemed to work out,” said Hix. “The students are glad, the parents are glad and the teachers are doubly glad.”

With roughly 75 percent of lessons now in-person, Hix hopes to have a full return sometime in July.
