INDIANAPOLIS, IND., (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Indiana lawmakers have advanced legislation that would have the state swallow up some Illinois counties.
More than 30 Illinois counties, with conservative majorities, have expressed an interest in leaving the blue state in recent years. So, Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston said join us.
"We don't want to see our neighbors to the west languish. Ultimately, their success or failure affects our own success or failure," Huston said. "To the Illinois counties and residents feeling unheard and unrepresented, we hear you and we'd like to invite you to come back home again to Indiana."
Some of the Illinois counties are in the western part of the state.
It would take action by legislatures in both states to make this happen as well as the United States Congress.
Governor JB Pritzker recently called it a “stunt” and said it wasn’t going to happen.
There’s also discussion about Lake County, Indiana joining Illinois.
