(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A statewide ban on vaping inside public buildings is just a signature away from becoming law in Illinois.

The bill expands the Smoke Free Illinois Act, which prohibited smoking in public buildings and within 15 feet of entrances.

State Sen. Julie Morrison (D-Lake Forest) sponsored the bill.

“There’s absolutely no reason a person – from a pregnant woman to a young child – should be exposed to harmful e-cigarette products while in public,” she said in a statement.

“It’s about time we set a clear standard that protects non-smokers and further de-normalizes tobacco use.”

In 2019, Illinois passed a law to raise the age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21 and limited the advertising of e-cigarette products last year.

If Governor JB Pritzker signs the bill into law, Illinois will be the 18th state in the nation to outlaw indoor vaping.
