(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Some experts in police leadership are reacting to the list of finalists for Chicago police superintendent that has been sent to Mayor Johnson.
Roseanna Ander, director of the University of Chicago's Crime Lab, applauds the work of the Community Commission on Public Safety and Accountability, which tapped the trio of candidates.
Ander says she knows all three of the finalists, two of whom are affiliated with the U of C's Police Leadership Academy that the Crime Lab runs.
The hopefuls are Madison Wisconsin Police Chief Shon Barnes and two top CPD officials, Angel Novalez and Larry Snelling.
Former New York City Police Commissioner Kenneth Corey says he also knows all three finalists, too. He said all are good people and well-qualified.
But when asked about how much difference it makes whether a superintendent comes from inside or outside the Chicago Police Department, Corey said being an outsider could be a disadvantage in a big city like Chicago.
“You don’t the people, you don’t know the culture, you don’t even know the neighborhood,” he said. “An insider – as long as you have the talent – is always going to get you out of the gate much more quickly, it’s going to help you deliver results much more quickly.”
The search for a new Chicago police superintendent is a topic of discussion on this weekend’s “At Issue,” which airs at 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m.
