CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- One of Chicago's oldest law schools has a new name starting Thursday.
The John Marshall Law School is now the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law.
University of Illinois Chicago Board of Trustees voted in May to change the name after a panel examined John Marshall's ties to the slave trade and determined that he was not a proper namesake for the law school.
The John Marshall Law School was founded in 1899 and was a private institution until in merged with UIC two years ago.
Marshall was the fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and is considered one of the most prominent legal minds in American history, but historians have recently taken another look at his personal and legal views on slavery.
