(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Brandon Johnson says Chicago police are working hard to hold those responsible for last weekend's violence accountable, but it's going to take a citywide effort to bring down the number of shootings.

Nearly two dozen people were shot last weekend and at least four were killed. Mayor Johnson calls the level of violence ''exhausting,'' especially for people in the affected neighborhoods.

He noted police have been making arrests and the numbers of shootings and homicides continue to decrease.

The challenge, he said, is to ensure that those who commit violence are arrested and held accountable.

He said the other challenge is to invest in the neighborhoods most plagued with violence and to help victims work through their trauma.

"I'm still very hopeful about the direction that we're going in the city of Chicago," Johnson said.
