(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is standing by his ally as some City Council members call for consequences after Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez appeared with a group that burned an American flag last week.

Sigcho-Lopez (25th) has said he attended a rally over the Israel-Gaza war but had nothing to do with it when an attendee burned a U.S. flag in a protest of the Biden Administration’s policies. Some of his council peers have demanded Sigcho-Lopez step down as a committee chair.

Pressed about the issue Thursday at an unrelated appearance, Johnson said he supports the First Amendment.

“I don’t mean to sound super-dramatic, but this is quite disturbing – that if we’re debating right now whether or not someone’s political ideology or position should determine whether or not they get a right to serve if they’ve been duly elected.”

Johnson, a former social studies teacher, said he doesn’t know why this is being debated.
