A suburban police department is changing part of its uniform.

Police officers in Joliet plan to wear a specialized uniform patch throughout April in recognition of Autism Awareness Month. The developmental disability causes a wide range of challenges in social interaction communication and behavior.

In a news release, Sergeant Dwayne English says the department recognizes the challenges stress and uncertainty the individuals with autism and their families navigate on a daily basis. The intent of the uniform patch is to raise awareness about autism as well as being a symbol of hope to citizens affected by it to any degree.
