(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A top federal judge here in Chicago says it's time for Congress to take strong new steps to protect judges from threats against them and their families.

In 2005, Senior U.S. District Court Judge Joan Lefkow's mother and husband were killed in their Chicago home by a gunman angry that she had dismissed his case.

Security for federal judges was beefed up, but five months ago, federal Judge Esther Salas' son Daniel was gunned down at the door of their New Jersey home.

Lefkow says Congress approved better security for federal Judge's back then. A measure called Daniel's Law would try to tighten things up.

Lefkow is joining the call make it harder for people to find the home addresses of federal judges.

She said she knows that's difficult because anything goes on the Internet. But Congress should act, she said.
