(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Actor Jussie Smollett is expected to be in a Chicago courtroom Wednesday morning for an evidentiary hearing, as he faces felony charges of lying to police about being attacked in January 2019.
Smollett, who co-starred on the FOX series “Empire,” has always maintained that the attack was homophobic and racist.
Chicago Police say Smollett lied and staged a bogus attack, getting two acquaintances, the Osundairo brothers, to make it look real.
At the center of what’s expected to happen this week is Smollett’s chief counsel, attorney Nenye Uche, and whether he can continue representing Smollett.
The special prosecutor in the case, Dan Webb, has raised concerns of a conflict of interest because he says Uche had communication early on with the Osundairo brothers. Uche has said that’s not correct.
This morning’s hearing is closed to the public.
“Empire,” which ran for six seasons, was filmed in Chicago and ended in 2020.
