(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Kane County Board is getting closer to possibly lifting its ban on marijuana businesses in unincorporated areas, after some past opponents say they've changed their minds.

Among them is Commissioner David Brown of Batavia, who said he was "absolutely against" marijuana sales when he ran for his seat.

Brown said he changed his mind after learning of the medical benefits of marijuana, as well as learning that pot sales would not increase crime.

“I think it’s a train that we can’t stop, anyway, so I’m not going to be trying to stop that train,” he said.

Brown spoke at this week's meeting of the Kane County Board's development committee, which voted in favor of lifting the ban.

The full county board could consider the measure at next month's meeting.
