CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago violence was brought up by President Trump during Tuesday night's presidential debate and that brought a stinging rebuke on social media from Mayor Lightfoot.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot's Twitter response to President Trump was, "Keep 'Chicago' out of your lying mouth," as he tried to pump up his push for "law and order" after moderator Chris Wallace asked if summer violence in cities was a political party thing when there had also been violence in Republican-run cities.
"I think it's a party issue. You could bring in a couple of examples, but if you look at Chicago, what's going on in Chicago, where 53 people were shot and eight died," Trump said.
The Mayor tweeted other comments during the debate including that the President was trying to sow frustration among voters, but that it wouldn't work.
She tweeted that Trump wanted to "create chaos and pandemonium, to confuse and frustrate voters to the point that they throw up their hands and walk away. Bad news, Mr. President—we're not backing down. You're through."
"It is stunning to watch and listen to the lies roll off (Trump's) tongue so effortlessly," she also tweeted. "It is pathetic that this man lies, while people are dying of COVID-19."
As mayor, Lightfoot has been quick to defend Chicago from critics including Trump.
Lightfoot in May responded to Trump tweeting a message that included, "When the looting starts, the shooting starts" in reply to rioting in Minneapolis and elsewhere following George Floyd's death, in saying, "He wants to show failures on the part of Democratic local leaders, to throw red meat to his base," Lightfoot said at the time. "His goal is to polarize, to destabilize local government and inflame racist urges. We can absolutely not let him prevail. And I will code what I really want to say to Donald Trump. It's two words. It begins with F and it ends with U."
