(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Kenosha resident got a stern warning after their small, pet alligator was found roaming the streets Tuesday morning.

Lt. Joseph Nosalik of the Kenosha Police Department said children found the gator first and promptly called police. Initially, he said, officers were skeptical.

Kenosha police eventually secured the alligator. They called a reptile sanctuary but received a call from the gator’s owners. Police returned it to the owner.

Nosalik said the owner did not, really, break any laws.

“There is no law currently on the books that would prohibit someone from having an alligator as a pet,” Nosalik said. “I’m sure the Kenosha Common Council will, at some point, look at this and perhaps research enacting an ordinance, but as of right now, no citations were issued.”

No one was injured, but Nosalik said he imagines there could be another problem when the animal grows up.

“We think there’s some issues throughout the United States where people really don’t think about the exotic animals they choose to keep as pets,” Nosalik said. “These things grow up and become adult animals … and are much more than what the regular person can control and safely care for.”
