(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — After closing as a movie house 2014, the 96-year-old Des Plaines Theatre reopens this weekend as a live performance stage.
The city of Des Plaines reportedly paid about $5.5 million to buy and renovate the building, and received about $2 million more from Rivers Casino for the project.
Mayor Andrew Goczkowski on Thursday said he believes the investment is worth it to spark the revitalization of downtown Des Plaines.
The first performance at the reopened venue is a nod to the building's past as a movie theater.
Film actor Kevin Costner and his Modern West band are the opening night act on Sunday.
