(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — More than 5,000 Chicago children have created time capsules to share their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stacey Gillett is the co-founder of the Once Upon Our Time Capsule project, in which children are sharing such things as written stories, drawings, photos and items related to how the pandemic affected them and their families.

"The goal of this project was really to give kids a platform to share their experience and their voice,” Gillett said. “We want to do that both because it's important for them to know that their story matters during this time, it's important for them to understand that they've been through something quite challenging.”

Gillett on Wednesday said the time capsules will be sealed for five years and then unsealed for children to learn about the pandemic.

In one essay provided by Once Upon Our Time Capsule, a child describes heightened feelings of anxiety: "When the virus hit was the scariest. It was like time completely stopped ... I felt completely alone and didn't see an end."

There will also be a book featuring many of the stories and experiences children shared in their time capsules.
