GURNEE (WBBM Newsradio) — Lake County’s largest public safety expo is returning to Gurnee Mills this weekend, bringing together dozens of police and fire agencies for live demonstrations, family activities and public safety education.
The 27th annual First Responders Expo will take place Saturday, May 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in parking lot E between Kohl’s and Bass Pro Shops. Admission is free.
More than 45 police and fire departments from across the region are expected to participate in the event, which is hosted by Gurnee Mills in partnership with the Lake County Fire Chiefs Association and the Lake County Chiefs of Police Association.
Attendees will be able to explore police cars, fire trucks and ambulances while watching live demonstrations that include K-9 teams, crash extrication exercises, bomb squad and robot demonstrations.
Organizers said the event is designed to provide public safety education in a family-friendly environment.
Children can also participate in hands-on activities, including a fire pole, obstacle course and giveaways. Food trucks will also be on site.
New this year is a “K-9 Corner,” where attendees can meet police, rescue and comfort dogs and learn more about the roles they play in emergency response and public safety.
The event typically draws thousands of visitors each year and is considered the largest public safety expo of its kind in the region.
