Cleanup and consternation are all that’s on the menu at a Lakeview restaurant today after a series of overnight break-ins on Chicago’s North Side.
“I don’t need this.”
Repair crews are hard at work here at Modern Grill on the corner of Halsted and Belmont, where the two front doors were completely smashed overnight.
“They used this brick, which did not come from here. It’s pretty heavy, it’s like 20 pounds. They hit over here, rolled the glass up and out and they came in.”

Owner Chris Karountzos says nothing was stolen, unlike a separate break-in back in June.
This time, she was notified around 4am…and she was not the only one.
“Not only did they get me, they got 11 other places.”
Chicago Police say all overnight between the Lakeview and Avondale neighborhoods.
“I’m losing my business for the day. My insurance deductible is so high, you don’t want to know what they charge us for business insurance in Chicago. You can’t open a business here anymore.”

Karountzos says her family has owned the restaurant since the 1980’s, and she’s now faced with a decision: close up shop…or beef up security.
“It’s more of a cost, but it’s going to be a hell of a lot cheaper than to keep replacing my windows or shutters. It’s going to be a lot cheaper. That’s my only other option.”
