(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — While there’s a lot of talk about the so-called “Great Resignation” in the workplace, a recent study shows — if anything — the opposite is true among Latinos in the Chicago area.

Overall, the size of the labor force has been decreasing even as the coronavirus pandemic eases. But a study by the Metropolitan Planning Council and the Latino Policy Forum shows Latinos are not part of that trend.

“Latinos, very early on, were very hard hit — with employment challenges, workforces shutting down, lack of protections in essential jobs,” says the MPC’s Daniel Cooper, a co-author of the study. “Then, as the pandemic went on and we started hearing about people leaving their jobs, we notice that wasn’t true for Latinos. The labor market was as tight as ever.”

Study co-author and researcher Margarita Bernal said these are people who have low-level jobs that cannot be done from home. As a Latina, she said, she’s not surprised at the findings.

The study says government policies need to address challenges to Latinos.
