(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A local hospital system is teaming up with the Cook County Sheriff’s Office to make it safer to own guns with children in the home.

NorthShore University Health System is partnering with the Cook County Sheriff’s Office to hand out free gun locks at the pediatric units of Evanston Hospital and Swedish Hospital as well as at the health center at Evanston Township High School.

It’s an effort to promote safe gun storage since guns are the leading cause of death of children in the United States.

The sheriff’s office said it has distributed hundreds of gun locks through similar programs with other hospital systems potentially preventing injury and death.
