Legal showdown may loom for controversial part of police contract

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago City Council committee is recommending a portion of the proposed new police contract be thrown out because it would allow for the most serious disciplinary cases to bypass the Chicago Police Board.

It's the one sticking point over the city's contract with the Fraternal Order of Police. It would allow officers accused of serious misdeeds to have an arbitrator decide the case in secret instead of more public Police Board hearings.

Anthony Driver, acting head of the Community Commission on Public Safety and Accountability, spoke against that provision. His panel helps select the Police Board.

But FOP President John Catanzara told the Workforce Development Committee that voting down the measure would essentially be illegal because it’s established labor law.

An arbitrator agreed with that position in a ruling.
