CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- New text messages released this week show a different side between Mayor Lightfoot and the Trump Family.

The public rhetoric between the mayor and president trump tends to be rather heated. But newly released texts released to WTTW News between the mayor and son Eric Trump over the summer were downright cordial.

Eric Trump, the executive vice president of the Trump Organization, and like many residences and businesses, had been in contact with City Hall about access to Trump Tower during the unrest downtown in late May.

In one text exchange in July, Eric Trump said he appreciated the phone call from the mayor and added that "We're all rooting for Chicago."

After the news, the mayor received criticism online for the text exchange. On Saturday, she responded on Twitter, saying, "part of my job is to protect residents, regardless of who their landlord is and whether or not I agree with their politics."

She added that the exchange does not change her opinion of Donald Trump but that his son's statements were a "very different tune from the barrage of attacks from the White House."
